Oftentimes, TMJ problems don't occur in a vacume. Most commonly there are also signs of occlusal or bite problems, airway issues, craniofacial pain, neck misalignment, pelvis roation and SI joint dysfunction, and poor craniofacial development. A good treatment plan will take all of these structures into account when discussing a plan.
Symptoms of TMJ and jaw dysfunction, apnea, and poor craniofacial development can be wide ranging and have a lot of overlap, but here is a short list:
TMJ & Jaw Dysfunction- headaches, tinnitus, neck and upper back pain, low back pain, jaw pain, grinding, clenching, tinnitus, tooth and gum issues.
Apnea & Airway Issues- increased risk for almost all disease and pathology, weight gain, low energy, hormonal issues, loss of sleep.
Poor Craniofacial Development- sinus problems, apnea and airway issues, TMJ and jaw dysfunction, crowding of the teeth, crooked teeth, asymmetry in the face, double chin, increased risk of cavities.
Of course headaches can be from any number of causes, and a good history and exam can help narrow down the list. Aside from TMJ issues, cranial strain, and bite problems, things like heavy metal toxicity, food sensitivities, mold and mycotoxin exposure, and even eye or tongue dysfunction can lead to headaches.
